The Team

AIDA ARNOLD
David Miller and Aida Arnold have been champions of the arts in the community of Antigonish for many decades starting with the McDonald’s Restaurant they owned on James Street for 24 years. It housed one of the finest art collections in the region appearing on the walls and in display cabinets throughout the restaurant. David and Aida were a couple dedicated to their marriage of 46 years until David suddenly passed away in 2018. Over the years they found joy in building a remarkable collection of Atlantic Canadian visual arts and fine crafts.
They retired from McDonald’s in 2012 and continued to support the arts in Antigonish with independently designed original concepts such as the lively Antigonish Art Fair that was launched in 2012. It continues today for five weekend events during the summer months. Together, David and Aida established the Arts House as an arm of the Art Fair, a bricks and mortar facility on the periphery of the Antigonish Mall which houses exhibits, workshops and events that support the artists of the region. Following David’s passing, Aida has kept these exceptional projects alive.
To honour David’s legacy, Aida initiated a plan to build an independent Arts Centre and Gallery for the community. Since early 2022 she has been leading efforts to make this happen, pledging significant financial support in the process.

TIIU PODER
Tiiu has been a staunch supporter of the arts in Nova Scotia since she arrived in 1994. A graduate of NSCAD in 1974 and earning her MFA at York University, her career has spanned the corporate world and several entrepreneurial ventures including the Aphrodite Art and Fashion boutique in Antigonish.
Following a stint at NSCAD as the Director of Development and founder of the Art and Entrepreneurship course, she came to Antigonish in 1997 to launch the StFX Enterprise Development Centre where she founded the regional arts council known today as Antigonish Culture Alive. Today she operates a consulting business specializing in policy development and administrative affairs with First Nations communities.
In 2022 she joined forces with her friend Aida Arnold, assisting her with the advancement of the Arts Centre project. Together they have created and refined the concept and developed the team that is tirelessly dedicated to the development of an Art Centre in Antigonish.

FENN MARTIN
Fenn Martin is probably best known for arriving to a festival with 2 tonnes of raw clay and converting some old jalopy into an alternate clay figurative reality. A graduate from the NSCAD U (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University), Martin largely works in clay, found and fabricated armatures. His work investigates past and present agrarian life while extending historical traditions in figurative ceramics. Inspired by his home town Antigonish’s remarkable history of grassroots co-ops, the Antigonish movement informs his explorations of small-scale agrarian labour.
